ELEVATE TECH UPDATE
SUMMER 2022
New trends that you should watch
These updates in Wi-Fi, TVs, and phone plans should be on your radar as you look at the latest technology. We're always here to walk you through the do's and don't's of tech.
5G for Home
In an area without good internet? Fast internet may be coming your way. With the growth of 5G, T-Mobile and Verizon have been releasing 5G Home Internet, which basically uses the 5G cell signal to provide internet to your home. This allows many remote or undeveloped locations to have fast (~200Mbps) internet without waiting for ISPs to run cable to your house. Now this doesn't replace cable or fiber; those are certainly faster and more reliable. But for some homes, cell service is the only option, and this could be the solution you've been waiting for.

QD-OLED TVs
There is a new type of screen that is hitting the market, and every manufacturer is trying to get in on it. It's called QD-OLED, and it takes the best of both QLED screens (brightness, reliability) and OLED screens (high contrast, incredible HDR) and combines them into a single panel. From TVs to computer monitors, these screens have outperformed almost any other screen on the market. They have even reduced or eliminated the issues with each panel type, such as permanent burn-in from OLEDs. Samsung and Sony are leading the charge like usual, and we should expect these screens to become the standard for high quality displays in the next year or so.

Phone Plans
Is it time for a new phone plan? Google Fi, Mint Mobile, and so many more seem to dominate the ads these days. Is it worth it? The short answer is…maybe. If you're looking for a few specific features, or trying to find the cheapest service that "just works," these would be perfect for you. However, if you're looking to have the full speed and not be throttled during "high traffic times," then we'd recommend sticking with one of the big 2: Verizon or T-Mobile. The alternative plans piggyback off the major carrier's signal, so even though you get a cheap phone plan with good coverage, the major carriers ALWAYS get priority. If that doesn't matter to you, then these alternative carriers have prices that can't be beat.
Did you know we provide advice on phone plans as well? Just like with cable-cutting, there may be some clever ways to save you some money.
