Home Server Installation in Network Rack | Elevate Technologies

The Ultimate Hobby

This project came from a North Carolina homeowner who had just moved into his long-term residence—and he had big plans. As a professional software engineer and lifelong tech enthusiast, he had a clear vision for the level of performance and control he expected from his home's technology systems. From 3D printers to self-hosted services, the house was destined to support a high number of advanced devices, and that meant everything started with the network.

The client had no existing structured wiring, so we were brought in to retrofit a complete 10-gig network throughout the entire finished home. Based on a strategic evaluation of the house layout, we decided to install a 25U floor-standing rack on the top floor, near an exterior wall. That allowed us to run all network cabling down the side of the home inside a large 2-inch PVC conduit and into the crawl space—connecting the attic, crawl space, and every floor in between. This created a reliable backbone for the home’s infrastructure while keeping most of the work concealed and non-invasive.

We pulled over 30 Cat6a cables to various rooms, with many rooms receiving dual runs to ensure bandwidth and redundancy. Every line was home-run to the rack, which included a Ubiquiti UDM Pro Max, an Enterprise 10-Gig switch, and a patch panel. Wi-Fi 7 wall-mounted access points were installed at key locations across the home, each hardwired for maximum performance.

We also outfitted the rack with a Reolink NVR system and installed a suite of Reolink cameras around the exterior of the property—some with PTZ functionality for enhanced coverage. The rack included professional-grade power management and a rack-mounted KVM console, giving the client sleek, direct access to his home server environment without needing to connect separate monitors or peripherals.

Phase two focused on smart lighting. As a dedicated Home Assistant user, the client wanted seamless local control. We installed dozens of Inovelli smart switches around the home, integrating dimmers, fans, and multiple 3-way switch configurations. Given the complexity of the existing electrical system, we navigated numerous quirks and wiring constraints to ensure reliable automation and function across all devices. The final result was a deeply personalized lighting system that put full control at the client’s fingertips.

This project showcased our ability to execute a complex retrofit in a finished home with minimal disruption—and deliver a reliable, high-performance foundation for years of tech-forward living.
